The First Line Software team works closely together every day to deliver solutions to our clients around the globe.
But what they accomplish together in their free time? Now that’s something truly inspiring.
Our team established the Ideas Garage, or what we call the FLS Garage, as an incubator for passion projects and tasks that need a creative approach. In our FLS Garage Slack channel, teammates can crowdsource and discuss ideas for projects that extend beyond our typical client work.
Those who join this Slack channel can share what tools they find useful for their pet projects, research for new technologies they’re interested in, or become part of a teammate’s big idea! Colleagues from different teams also can collaborate on creating new tools which will help make their work run more smoothly.
What kinds of projects do our colleagues work on in their freetime? They run the gamut from integrating new applications to custom hardware, exploring AI capabilities, and sharing recommendations for projects based on individual research.
Our Delivery Director Garegin Kazaryan manages the FLS Garage community and connects teammates to work on projects together.
“FLS Garage is an initiative uniting the desire, talent and free time of employees towards reaching a value for both the company and themselves. Colleagues can learn, teach, or explore something with guidance from the company. FLS Garage is a place where any of us can publish our own ideas (using SMART criteria) and find like-minded colleagues who are willing to devote their free time to get the job done.”
“It was created to utilize our colleagues’ creativity and curiosity when they want to explore new technologies, concepts, or approaches. I think many would agree that our ongoing work projects are not necessarily the right place for this kind of experimenting. So we decided to give this creative opportunity to everybody. And we made it efficiently, creating an entity which gave it a form and kept it in shape."
According to Garegin, the results of FLS Garage projects are felt beyond a project’s final product.
“The Garage has a practical and emotional impact, and I believe that both are important. Do you know that feeling when you proposed an idea, implemented it, and that idea helped your colleagues get their job done better? That is what the FLS Garage is about.”
Our PPC Marketing Specialist Alina Sokolova experienced the power of the FLS Garage when she called upon the community to use their skills to complete a project. Through the community, Alina was linked with Developer Bihn Nguyen, who dedicated some of his free time to working on the project.
“I help the HR team with career website analytics, and we noticed that there is a lot of traffic that Google Analytics can’t identify. One reason is the links are shared via messengers, documents, emails, etc. And our recruitment team uses these a lot.”
“To get more transparency we decided to use UTM tags for those links, so we could see which channel brought the traffic to the website. However, we needed to make the process of adding these tags easy for the recruiters, as well as stay consistent in the tag names that we use. So we asked for help in the FLS Garage to build such a tool tailored exactly to our needs.”
“Garegin helped me with defining requirements and describing the project and Bihn was our hero who made it real.”
