Inside the AI Lab at First Line Software: Where Ideas Meet Real-World Engineering

May 20, 2026

Building an AI demo is one thing. Making it work reliably when real people start using it? That's where things get interesting.

At First Line Software, our AI Lab is where engineers experiment with new ideas, test what's possible, and turn promising concepts into working AI solutions. It's a space for hands-on problem-solving, where even seemingly small technical details can lead to unexpected challenges.

From Experimentation to Real-World Solutions

The AI Lab focuses on rapid prototyping, validating AI use cases, and developing solutions that can eventually make their way into production.

The process starts with identifying a problem worth solving. From there, the team builds prototypes, tests them in realistic conditions, and refines what works.

And sometimes, the biggest challenges aren't where you'd expect them.

The Engineering Behind a Conversation

When Emil Shaykhilislamov, AI Engineer at First Line Software, was developing a conversational AI avatar for a GenAI symposium, he expected voice activity detection to be relatively straightforward.

It wasn't.

The avatar needed to recognize when someone had finished speaking, handle interruptions naturally, and avoid responding to conversations happening in the background.

For example, if someone paused for a second between two sentences, the avatar might interpret them as separate questions and start answering too early. If someone interrupted the avatar mid-response, the system had to recognize the new input and stop speaking.

Solving these challenges took three to four times longer than Emil initially expected. But the team worked through all three issues, making the avatar better suited to natural, real-time conversations.

It's the kind of engineering challenge that rarely makes it into a polished demo, but makes all the difference to the person using the technology.

Building Things People Actually Use

The AI Lab's work also finds its way into First Line Software's own tools.

One project Emil is particularly proud of is his Talk-to-documents solution, which has been used in an internal HR Slack application and Jaime, the AI assistant on First Line Software's website.

These projects reflect what the AI Lab is about: exploring new technologies, solving practical problems, and learning from the process of turning ideas into usable solutions.

For engineers who enjoy experimentation but also want to see their work put to use, that's where the interesting work happens.
